Many of William Shakespeare’s plays trace their sources back to folktales. “Pericles” is his retelling of sweeping tale that dates back to Classical Greece.
BEFORE SHAKESPEARE: CYMBELINE
Cymbeline is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. It has many folktale elements and, like a folktale, it mirrors reality perfectly. The play is based, in part, on a story from Boccaccio’s “Decameron.”
