Philoctetes

1777.

From the British Museum:

The greek hero with wild hair, wearing the remnants of his armour with his quiver slung on his back, sitting on a rock engraved with classical reliefs on the island of Lemnos, looking upwards, and winding the bandages around the snake-bite on his foot, for which reason he has been left behind by his companions on their way to Troy, with a dead bird that he has shot at his feet; after the plate was transformed from an aquatint into an etching. 1777
