Ulysses and His Companions Fighting the Cicones
Ulysses and His Companions Fighting the Cicones Before the City of Ismaros
1633
This print by Theodoor van Thulden is based one of the frescoes by Francesco Primaticcio (1503-1570) in the now-destroyed “Galerie d’Ulysse” in the Château de Fontainebleau.
Once the longest gallery in France - twice as long as Versaille’s Hall of Mirrors - in 1738, after extensive damage by water, the gallery was destroyed by order of Louis XV.
Several of Primaticcio’s initial drawings have survided, including this one at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 1640, van Thulden published his Les travaux d'Ulysse, a collection of 58 etchings based on the original frescoes.
